The Internet is a common denominator for populism on both sides of the Atlantic, as alarmist digital networking and extreme right-wing populism can easily be spread via digital media. The US and the UK are two of the most digitally advanced OECD economies, and therefore the diffusion of aggressive populist political campaigns via social media is rather easy in both countries. Within the “free” Western Internet, almost no quality standards for information and news websites have been adopted. Human beings have a shared psychological trait, namely, to have a certain preference in terms of paying particular attention to warning signals about risks and potential dangers in our environment; populist leaders and political action groups often (mis-)use this effect to get attention for their ideology by combining fake news alerts or exaggerated statistics with the message that they “are ready to solve this problem and that they are the only party which can do so effectively”. The US and the UK (plus Ireland) are in the same language group in the Internet, and thus many US populist messages will address the populations of both countries which creates a natural overlap of populism across the Atlantic through US-UK digital linkages.
